The Setting

setting-bucketCasas del XVI is located in Colonial City, also known as Old Town, the historic original district of Santo Domingo, D.R. Thanks to its plethora of historic, cultural and architectural treasures, Colonial City has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

In 1496, Bartholomew Columbus, younger brother of Christopher, sailed the Caribbean isles searching for a site on which to build the first permanent European settlement in the New World. Here, where the Ozama River reaches the sea, he found it, an unspoiled place of uncommon natural beauty, a sanctuary from the hardships of travel, exploration and adventure.

Within a few short years, Santo Domingo was the center of cultural, political and economic activity in the European New World. Alcázar de Colón, the Columbus family palace, is just off Calle Las Damas, the oldest paved street in the Americas. Nearby is the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor, the first cathedral in the New World, completed in 1541.

Today, the original portion of Santo Domingo is known as the Colonial City, and it remains the city’s cherished and well-preserved heart. It is a heart that today pulses with historic interest and modern passion. From the oldest cathedral in the Americas and one-of-a-kind museums, to great shopping and scintillating nightlife, when you are in the Colonial City, you leave the cares of the modern world behind and move to the rhythms of a more graceful and romantic era.

The Houses

homes-bucketThe individual houses that together make up Casas del XVI were built in the 16th century or incorporate elements of 16th century architectural designs. The tiled Roman roofs and original vaulted brick archways, for instance, evoke Colonial City’s romantic past. Their history helps give each of the Casas its own unique, eclectic character.

Now each home has been meticulously restored, preserving the charm and grace of the old, while adding the comfort and convenience of the modern and new. Original heirloom art and furnishings are complemented by an eclectic collection of works from contemporary local and international artists.

No matter which of the houses you choose to stay in, you will be immersed in an environment that connects you with a simpler lifestyle, where experiencing days full of passion and authenticity is the major preoccupation.

The Service

service-bucketService is what really sets the Casas del XVI experience apart. From the moment you are personally greeted at the airport and deftly accompanied through immigration, to the day you depart, no detail or comfort is overlooked in making your stay a most memorable one.

Once you arrive at Casas del XVI, your casa’s mayordomo, or butler, welcomes you and thereafter attends to your every need while you are in residence. Within moments of your arrival, and without you quite noticing, he has eased you into the lounge and slipped a welcoming cocktail in your hand. Throughout your stay, he sees to it that everything is to your satisfaction, and that each time you arrive back at the casa, your room is prepared just so.

Overseeing everything and missing nothing is our concierge, who is always at your service and ready at your whim to arrange any excursion or activity. No matter what adventures entice you by day or rhythms beckon you by night, simply relay your wishes to your mayordomo, and he will ensure that our concierge takes care of the rest.

In addition to the personalized service and attention, the amenities and facilities of Casas del XVI are designed to satisfy the discriminating traveler. From the biggest things, like a full sized swimming pool and in-room entertainment systems, to the smallest, like individually assigned guest iPhones and a supply of premium bathroom toiletries, every facet of the experience is designed to make you feel a sense of comfort and ease that is often longed for, but so rarely realized.
